The theme of Roses 2023 is ‘Shine a Light’, where we will be raising awareness of the issue of sexual violence in sport and how we can all play a role in stopping it. Throughout the weekend there will be interactive art pieces, fundraising activities, and more for you to get involved with. Alongside this year’s theme, we’re also displaying two original art pieces. The first will be linked to the Respect the Rose pledge, whilst the other will be showcasing survivor stories and quotes via an opt-in interactive exhibit.
“I firmly believe in the power of sport. Sport has the ability to bring people from all backgrounds together and unify communities around a shared goal, which is a really beautiful thing. Unfortunately however, it is estimated that at least 40% of people will experience some form of sexual violence within the sports setting. This needs to change. By using Roses 2023 to Shine A Light on sexual violence within sport, we are hoping to start a very important conversation and enable change to happen at both the university level and more widely.” - Franki Riley, York Sport Union President.
Survive are a York-based charity who support adult survivors of sexual trauma and help them rebuild their lives, and are a great fit to be the charity partner for Roses 2023. We’ve put fundraising for Survive at the heart of Roses, with many ways for competitors and attendees to show their support.
There’s loads of ways to support our Charity Partner at Roses 2023! As well as donating with the link above, all of our Opening Ceremony tickets are available with a £1 optional donation to Survive!
Across the weekend of Roses you’ll be able to purchase a limited edition Roses 2023 pin badge from one of our Charity Champions for a suggested donation of £2. We’ll also have reusable cups in all of our Roses bars- you’ll need to put a £2 deposit down on your cup, which we can either refund to your card or donate on your behalf to Survive.
Finally if you order food and drink to your table in one of our venues you’ll be able to add a small donation to your order. We’re grateful for all your support in making a difference to a local charity that does so much for survivors of sexual violence.
“It’s amazing to have my student union highlighting something that has affected me and so many others in our university community. It’s a great show of social solidarity and has solidified that York was the correct choice. It means a lot.” - Anonymous York Student
Roses 2023 wouldn’t be possible without our amazing Student Volunteers and Charity Champions! They will be the boots on the ground all weekend helping to raise money for Survive and ensuring your Roses experience will be one you never forget. Be sure to give them a wave and a thank you if you see them around!
Unlike the historic battle after which Roses takes its namesake, this tournament puts respect, fair play, and kindness at its core. All players are asked to sign a ‘Respect the Rose’ pledge before participating in the tournament, and we ask all spectators to uphold the values of the Respect the Rose pledge, which you can find in full below:
As the theme of this year’s tournament is to Shine A Light on sexual violence, we are also asking all players to agree to one additional pledge:
Everyone at Roses is invited to join us in this mission. Across the weekend we will have an interactive art piece where anyone can place their fingerprint to show solidarity with survivors of sexual violence. To find the location of this art piece across the weekend, keep an eye on our social media!
